Experience the Awe-Inspiring Beauty of a Canopy Tour this Fall Season
The tourist season in Newfoundland generally runs from June until the August or even September. This is when our weather is at its best and warmest! But for me, there is another season where nature spreads its beauty—fall. During this time, the west coast of Newfoundland—with its mountains, heavily forested valleys, and lakes and rivers—has so much to offer visitors who enjoy the outdoors. The weather is gorgeous, ranging warm to cool and crisp, and plenty of sunshine. It’s A great time for outdoor activities, like the famous canopy tour, without having to battle flies, mosquitoes, or large crowds! Gros Morne National Park and Marble Mountain are two places you should not miss this fall!
Gros Morne National Park has lots to do throughout September and October. The unique Tablelands, between Woody Point and Trout River, is a picturesque geological wonder. You can take a guided tour or do your own walk of this 260-million-year-old reddish-brown moon-like mountain, created by colliding tectonic plates. Standing at the top you will see magnificent views of Trout River pond, Bonne Bay, and Gros Morne Mountain. the contrasting and colourful landscape of green gardens and ocean views on the opposite side of the road only add to the beauty.
If you are in reasonable fit shape, take the time to climb Gros Mountain Mountain. Be sure you have six or seven hours for the return trip, and make sure you take your camera. Once you have completed your trek to the top and back, you will have witnessed some of the beauty of the park’s flora and fauna, including caribou, moose, ptarmigan, black bears, flowering plants, mosses, liverworts, lichens, and oddly-shaped coastal tuckamore. Like a canopy tour itself, the hike to the top will take you above the treeline, with a spectacular view of Ten Mile Pond.
For more spectacular scenery, take the actual canopy tour of an equally beautiful area, Marble Mountain and the Humber Valley. Marble Mountain Ski Resort is located in beautiful Steady Brook, and if you wish to see the beauty of the area, take the time to go zip lining. This activity, often called a canopy tour, takes about two hours and will give you the thrill of a lifetime. The adrenaline will be pumping through your views as you zip along nine lines—sometimes as high as 280 feet in the air—over the Steady Brook Falls, where the views of Marble Mountain, Steady Brook, and the Humber Valley will be awe-inspiring.
